Competence Studio gives school leavers a structured, AI-assisted, mentor-reviewed path into real digital work readiness — with portfolio evidence and parent visibility built in.
The gap year problem
Free courses are abundant. But most school leavers don't know how to turn scattered content into confidence, evidence, and a real career direction.
Watches random YouTube videos. Starts five courses. Finishes none. Loses confidence. Wastes a year.
Completes a course but can't explain what they know or show what they built. No portfolio. No proof.
Follows a structured pathway, completes practical tasks, builds a portfolio, and can explain every piece of work.
A real human mentor reviews progress, flags support needs, and approves progression. AI assists — humans decide.
How it works
Three stages. Practical evidence at every step. Human judgement where it matters.
Eight career pathways
Every pathway is designed for school leavers with no prior experience. All include AI fluency, practical tasks, mentor support, and portfolio evidence.
Three-level programme
Each level builds on the last. Learners progress when they can demonstrate competence — not just complete content.

Foundation Confidence · Day 18 of ~60
Joshua explained his JavaScript function logic clearly this week — a real step forward. Next focus is connecting JS to the DOM. Strong progress overall.
The mentor model
AI makes the programme affordable and scalable. Human mentors remain the trust layer. Neither replaces the other.
Simple, honest pricing
A monthly retainer — not a large upfront course fee. Pay while the programme is working for you. Cancel any time.

Common questions
No prior experience is required for any pathway. The placement assessment helps us understand your child's starting point so we can place them at the right level — Foundation Confidence, Applied Builder, or Work-Ready Contributor. Stronger learners can fast-track through material they already know.
A typical day involves 45–90 minutes of focused learning. This includes a short resource (10–20 minutes), a practical task (15–30 minutes), a confidence check (5–10 minutes), and a brief reflection. Learners set their own daily rhythm within the programme structure.
Every Mentored plan learner is assigned a named human mentor. AI assists the mentor with progress summaries, draft feedback, and risk flags — but all progression decisions, report wording, and sensitive support conversations are handled by the human mentor. Mentors typically respond within one business day.
The system is designed for this. Low confidence scores trigger mentor alerts. Missed check-ins prompt a gentle follow-up. Learners can repeat any concept without stigma, reduce their daily load, or take a planned pause. The mentor works with the learner and family to agree a support plan.
Not necessarily. Competence Studio is designed as a purposeful pre-university year, a gap-year alternative, or a practical bridge into digital work. Some learners use it before deciding about university. Others use it instead of university for their first digital career role. We don't claim equivalence with formal degrees.
Yes. Monthly subscriptions can be cancelled at any time before the next billing date. Annual subscriptions can be cancelled and will not auto-renew. We do not offer refunds for partial months, but we will always work with families experiencing genuine difficulty.
Yes. Competence Studio operates under a data governance framework aligned to POPIA (South Africa) and GDPR (international). We never sell learner data.
